Big State Festival a Success

Dear readers,

Last weekend the Big State Festival was held at the Texas World Speedway, just south of College Station, Texas. With over 50 country and western bands performing, including Willie Nelson, crowds for the three-day event topped 30,000.

Besides at one time being the fastest track in the world, the Texas World Speedway was made famous in 1974 by hosting Willie Nelson's Second Annual 4th of July Picnic, which drew up to 50,000 fans. The speedway makes a great fall venue.

Remarkable about the festival is the fact that over the course of three days, there were only four complaints and six arrests. Of the arrests, the majority were for public intoxication (surprise),  and marijuana possession (dude). Of the four complaints, three involved theft and one came from the nearest subdivision where they complained of noise.

Its great that we can get 30,000 reasonable people together, even with alcohol, and have this few conflicts. I think it says a lot about the organizers and participants. I know the county commission was Leary to issue the permit for the event, and I'm very happy that their confidence was justified.

Its also great to see the Texas World Speedway used again as a concert venue. Thanks to everyone who helped make it a success.

Blue skies,

Sam White

It is nice to go to a fair and not worry about the crime and gangs. Sounds like a great time

Thanks for sharing about the big State Festival.  They are hoping they can do it every year.  My husband is a deputy sheriff so he was there keeping law and order...16 hours each day.  He said there were tons of people.  If we could attract more events like this, it would help merchants, restaurants, hotels, and other businesses.  Although I must say, our economy is fantastic in Bryan College Station.  I'm proud to be a native of this area AND a TEXAN!
